Google announced its new OS "Google Chrome OS"

Happy news for all Google lovers, Google is releasing Google Chrome OS in the second half of 2010.

"Google Chrome OS is attempt to re-think what operating systems should be."

Google Chrome OS is an open source, lightweight operating system that will initially be targeted at netbooks. Later this year we will open-source its code, and netbooks running Google Chrome OS will be available for consumers in the second half of 2010. Because google is already talking to partners about the project, and google will soon be working with the open source community, wanted to share there vision now so everyone understands what we are trying to achieve.

Google Chrome OS is a new project, separate from Android. Chrome OS is being created for people "who spend most of their time on the web" according to Sundar Pichai, VP Product Management at Google.

Google Chrome OS will run on both x86 as well as ARM chips and there are working with multiple OEMs to bring a number of netbooks to market next year. The software architecture is simple — Google Chrome running within a new windowing system on top of a Linux kernel. For application developers, the web is the platform. All web-based applications will automatically work and new applications can be written using your favorite web technologies. And of course, these apps will run not only on Google Chrome OS, but on any standards-based browser on Windows, Mac and Linux thereby giving developers the largest user base of any platform.

Eagerly waiting for Google Chrome OS !!!

Its always good that additional competition will be benefitial for the customers. But we all should bear in mind that other than Search/AdSense Google has not come-out with another world beater product that is worth its salt.

There have been highly promising beta launches, highly acclaimed by critics & enthusiasts and then forgotten in six months while the brightest in Google have moved on to thier next pet project!

"If google wants to succeed in its boldest product launch to date, the Chrome OS, the company needs to focus on its success with the same intensity it once dedicated to search. If it doesn't, Chrome OS will end up just like Chrome: yet another irrelevent skunkworks project used by a handful of digerati and Microsoft-haters and ignored by everyone else."

Meanwhile Microsoft is not going to wait & do nothing till Google launches its first version in the end of 2010. While I welcome Google to the OS market, I believe you should watch this space for more updates for updates from the Other end of the camp(Microsoft).

Competetion is great for Us, the consumer.

Microsoft has Gazelle on its part (http://research.microsoft.com/en-us/news/features/gazelle-062909.aspx
). Is it an OS inside the browser? 2010 will be interesting. Just like windows evolved.

I agree with Alex.
"Competetion is great for Us, the consumer."

I dont think google will beat the share of microsoft in notebook or desktop in 2010. Google has to do more to attract the people because though linux has lot of free tools and functionality but it has less share .
I read recent article about "The unvarnished truth about Chrome OS" (http://www.expresscomputeronline.com/20090727/edit01.shtml) they are stating that "My verdict is that Chrome OS is not going to beat Windows 7 on netbooks. Microsoft has a year’s head start on Chrome OS. At best, Chrome OS will capture a niche market of 10% or less, much as the Chrome browser has done.

One thing that Google doesn’t get, much as Netscape didn’t in the 1990s, is that while a browser is a wonderful piece of technology, it isn’t the perfect platform for every application."

I believe Google give better alternative os. Not Wonderful os
